Kratom Research Study
Building a Better Picture of Kratom Use
Log & Taper It! is leading a new kind of research on kratom use, going beyond traditional studies to build the largest, most accurate dataset ever. Instead of relying on surveys that ask people to remember their past usage, we collect information in real-time as you log your doses. This gives us a clear and honest picture of how people actually use kratom in their daily lives. By participating in this effort, you're helping create a comprehensive body of evidence that can be used to inform policies and ensure the future of kratom is based on real data, not guesswork.
Why Our Research is Different
Most kratom research is limited by small sample sizes, one-time data collection, and a reliance on people's memory, which can lead to inaccuracies. Our app-based approach solves these problems. With Log & Taper It!, we can gather a massive amount of data over many months from thousands of users across the country. Because you're already tracking your usage for your own personal benefit, the data is more natural and unbiased. This allows us to track long-term trends, see how different products affect people, and understand the relationship between kratom use and lifestyle factors like productivity, sleep, and overall well-being.
Your Contribution to the Research
Participating in the research initiative is completely voluntary. If you choose to opt in, all the data you provide is fully anonymous, with no personally identifiable information ever collected. The app will ask you to log your doses with details like the amount, product type, and why you're taking it using the Effects Tags in the app. You can also participate in one-time surveys about your background and periodic check-ins about your lifestyle. Your contribution is vital; it helps scientists and policymakers understand real-world dosing habits, identify potential safety issues, and create informed regulations that protect consumers while preserving access. Your privacy is our top priority, and your personal tracking data always remains under your control.
- The research initiative is supported by a unique crowdfunded model where premium users contribute to the research by providing access to active participants.
- The sponsorship program is a key component of this model, allowing premium subscribers to earn "sponsor slots" which they can then use to provide free, research-based access to other users, ensuring the data collection is both sustainable and ethical.
- A system of Research points has been developed, to encourage consistent quality contributions, without encouraging users to log more doses or use more Kratom.
Existing Research Falls Short
Existing kratom research often falls short due to major limitations, but our innovative approach with Log & Taper It! is designed to overcome them. The 2017 Grundmann survey, which collected data from 8,049 users, is currently the most cited study on kratom; however, because it was a one-time, retrospective survey, it provides a limited "snapshot" of a user's experience. This type of research is highly susceptible to recall bias, where users might not accurately remember their usage patterns over months or years, leading to an incomplete or misleading picture of reality. Our approach is different. We focus on real-time longitudinal tracking, collecting data as you use the app. This creates an unparalleled level of accuracy by eliminating recall bias. With the potential for a massive scale of over 10,000 active users, we are building a dataset that will dwarf any previous kratom study. Since our users are tracking for their own benefit, the data is more natural and less biased. Additionally, because the app can be used anywhere, we will be able to gather geographically diverse data from all 50 states, providing a truly comprehensive picture of kratom use across the country.
