How to Start Growing

What Does The Bible Say About Responsibilities As A Man?

When I first realized that I was failing in my role as a Man, especially as a partner to my girlfriend, I looked to the Bible for guidance. Luckily there is a ton of very specific information that lays it all out very well.

So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.

Ephesians 5:28

This first verse is not complicated, but it takes a ton of honesty, humility, strength, sacrifice, and patience, among other things.

I first had to be completely honest with myself, and take an objective look at me and my behavior and sometimes painful. I'm still learning in this regard and I may never be perfect, but I do make an honest and consistent effort to observe myself, and especially reflect on past interactions.

Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them.

Collossians 3:19

What this means to me is not to sweat the small things in your relationship. I had a huge issue with this for years, things like dirty dishes in the sink, laundry on the floor, you get the picture.

I was constantly trying to change behavior that was outside of my control. Sometimes it worked temporarily, but this was rarely the case. Most of the time it just resulted in me getting upset, starting a conflict, and ultimately just wasting a bunch of energy.

It took me my whole life to finally understand that the only behavior I could ever possibly change consistently, is my own. If you truly and honestly work hard and do your best to change bad behaviors in yourself, situations will improve.

Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

Ephesians 5:25

This is one of the most powerful verses I can think of for getting a full understanding of what is required of you from the laws in the Bible. I came across this article on the subject that really helped provide a blueprint of how we are supposed to love and sacrifice for our women.
